Ich bin Berliner – Berliner Weisse

Beliener Weisse is traditionally served with flavored syrups, at least in Berlin, but here in the US, I’ve only seen it unflavored, and recently pre-flavored in the can or bottle. Never before with syrup. At Cerberus there were a couple of options to go with, and I chose the raspberry syrup. (Thoughts on the Woodruff Syrup are below in the update)
This is absolutely delicious. The slightly tart beer is easy to drink, and I think that if I had a quantity of it at my house on the weekend, I would more than likely get into trouble. I could see having “a few” of these, and before I knew it, have finished it all off.
[Updated 9/2/18]
We went back to Cerberus this week, and I opted to try the Woodruff Syrup this time. I have to preface this by mentioning that I never had tried any Woodruff flavorings before. Evidently it’s a plant, also called the “Waldmeister” or “Master of the Wood” (thanks to the Baltimore Brew for the explanation).

The Germans harvest Woodruff just when its delicate white flowers are blooming on spikes at the center of its fanned leaves, using it to sweeten white wine, which they also spruce up with champagne and lemon slices.

That being said, I enjoyed the Berliner Weisse with that flavor. At first I wasn’t very fond of it, and thought it might even have reminded me of Lemonade when it was mixed with the already tart beer, but it grew on me. I do still prefer the raspberry syrup, but I think I might have to try Woodruff flavoring / syrup in some other context so I can get a better idea of what it tastes like on it’s own.
