Elysium Hazy IPA

We were back at Cerberus tonight to try some of the beers we didn’t have time for a few weeks ago.  I love me a good IPA and this one seems to be one of their flagship beers so you do the math.  Not to mention that the outdoor “beer garden” is a great place to enjoy their great beer and I don’t know how much longer this nice evening weather is going to be holding out for us.  I’m afraid that we may not be able to come here much in the colder months because of the combination of Cerberus’ popularity and limited seating.  Anyway, on to the beer…

Hazy, Tropical, Citrusy, and Crushable.

I don’t know if I would necessarily agree with that, but I certainly wasn’t disappointed.  It was nicely hopped, but not too much so it was smooth as well.  I didn’t get very much citrus out of it, however.  I would definitely recommend to a person who is an IPA fan.

Mike had a sip and noted that this could easily be defined as an East Coast IPA.  As I am just a Beer Snob in Training®, he had to tell me what that meant.  I did a bit more research and have to say, I think he nailed it.  The defining characteristics of an East Coast IPA fit this beer to a “T”.  Hazy color; balanced flavor profile; hops don’t dominate the palate and let the malt come through.  All of those describe the Elysium.

I have to be honest, I don’t really know a whole lot about the East Coast IPAs either. I’ve only had a few.

What’s funny is that I was visiting relatives in Vermont, and they told me about this brewery nearby named “Alchemist Brewing“, and how people went crazy for one of their beers, Heady Topper. It sounded interesting, and I wanted to bring something back for some friends, so I figured, why not.

Of course, if you’re in the know, Heady Topper is considered one of the first East Coast IPAs, and everyone does in fact go crazy about it, since it wasn’t being distributed very far from home.

At the time I thought it was pretty interesting, little did I know. For the record, Jesse was one of the friends that I gave a can or two to.  🙂
