FH Beerworks East January Visit

On our continuing quest to finish hitting every single brewery and brewpub in the springs, this week we hit the new FH Beerworks East location.

First off, the location is really great. The taproom is pretty spacious, with lots of windows, and garage doors that can be opened on nice days. There’s a great view of the brewery from the taproom, and a nice outdoor seating area. When warmer weather gets here, I’ll have to test it out.

What we had this trip:

Thai Chili Saison – I saw that this was tapping the night of our visit, and was pretty excited to try it. I have to say, it was really unique. Just a little bit of heat, which grows as you drink it. I’ve had a lot of chili beers, and it was really interesting to have the Saison flavors mixed with the chili.
Straw colored and hazy. Finishes clean with just tha lingering heat.

Merry Marauder Winter Warmer – 6.4% ABV, 18 IBU. This beer didn’t seem like it was dark enough to be a winter warmer, but I was wrong on that one. Really nice malty flavors, lingering clove and or Ginger flavors which grew stronger as it warmed.

Dark Cherry Kettle Sour – 4.9% ABV 14 IBU. Slightly Sour, probably a good entry point for sour beer initiates, light cherry flavor. Really nice beer overall.

S’mores Pastry Porter – 9% ABV, 42 IBU. Sorry, but I gotta say, I won’t be saying I want s’more of this one. For one reason or the other, the taste reminded me of cough syrup. Maybe someone with better taste buds might be reminded of different flavors. I’m sure it’s a well brewed beer, just not my cup of tea.

I agree with Mike. This is a really nice location. The tasting room was very spacious, but cozy at the same time. I, too, am looking forward to visiting during the warmer months and trying out the outdoor seating area.

Mike and I made sure to try different beers this trip

FH Beerworks
(L-R) Paralysis by Analysis, Batch One, Don’t Drink the Juice and Extra Thicc Strawberry Milkshake

Paralysis by Analysis – 6.5% ABV, 52 IBU – I thought I’d give this one a go because I’m a sucker for clever beer names, especially alliterative ones, and because I needed to round out the flight. THis was a good beer. Not great, but good. I didn’t regret ordering it, that’s for sure. A very mild, light, not bitter IPA.

Batch One – ?? ABV, ?? IBU – Of the four beers I tried, this was the stand out, star of the show. I really enjoyed this one. It had a very distinct grapefruit flavor that was not overpowering.

Don’t Drink the Juice – 6.8% ABV, 30 IBU – If I recall correctly, this is one of FH’s flagship brews, certainly one of the most popular, it seems. It’s popular for good reason; it’s a very good beer. As an American Pale Ale, it chcks all the right boxes – citrusy, the right amount of hops. It’s an easy drinker.

Extra Thicc Strawberry Milkshake – 7.6% ABV, 50 IBU – I was really looking forward to trying this beer. Strawberry milkshake with peaches in an IPA? Sounds good to me. Unfortunately, one of two things happened. I hyped it up to myself too much, or this was oversold. I got the barest hint of strawberry on the first few sips and no peaches. Also, despite the wonderful opacity, no lactose/creamy-ness. I also didn’t get any hoppiness from it, either. Now, with that said, had this beer been advertised as a mild, hazy IPA, I would have no issues with it. I actually enjoyed drinking it, I was just looking forward to more berry/peaches.
