BierWerks / Pig Out Food Truck August 2019 Visit

On the way back from visiting Paradox in August we decided to pay a visit to BierWerks Brewery in Woodland Park, grab some tasty German beer, and maybe a bite to eat.

When we passed it earlier in the day, they were absolutely packed, but the crowd had let up a little bit and it was just moderately busy.

Looking at the beer menu we were a bit confused, there was a fairly limited selection of beers, and they all listed another brewery. What was going on?

After talking with the staff the mystery was explained. BierWerks had recently lost their brewer, and were in the process of getting a part time brewer up to speed. So for now, there were only other breweries commercial examples of German styles available.

As I mentioned, we were also interested in grabbing a bite to eat while were at BierWerks, and there just so happened to be a friendly neighborhood food truck right in the lot. There was also an opportunity to get wood-fired pizza, but we went with the BBQ.

PigOut BBQ Food Truck

For BBQ, it was just fine, the truck had a selection of BBQ sauces, one of which was a Carolina (mustard) style, which earned kudos from me. I had the brisket sandwich, and my wife had the pulled pork sandwich. Each came with a side, and everything was pretty decent. The pork was a bit dry, but it was the end of the day, so I’m willing to cut them a little slack.

[Jesse] My wife and I ordered after Mike and his wife and chose the brisket as well. Turns out that it was quite popular and Mike got one of the last ones. Oh well, c’est la vie. I changed to the andouille sausage sandwich and my wife, the pulled pork. I wound up finishing hers as well, so i was able to sample both! The sausage was tasty, but not the spiciest andouille I’ve ever had and, as Mike mentioned, the pork was a tad dry, but quite good.

What were the beers available you ask?

Mile-Hi-Hefe - Tovoli Brewing Company

Mile Hi Hefe – Hefeweizen Tivoli Brewing Company- 5% ABV I can see why the “powers that be” at BierWerks chose this beer to serve as the representative hefe in their German-themed brewery. It’s very true to style in that I picked up both banana and clove but not too much of either. Overall, it’s a good beer and paired very well with the andouille sausage sandwich I had.

Amber-Alaskan Brewing

Amber – Alaskan Brewing Company – 5.3% ABV – An Alt Bier, it’s nice and malty, pretty light, and just plain delicious. No complaints here. It’s not very hoppy at all, and the malt really shines without being cloying. Medium dry finish.
