Avery Brewing Elle’s Brown Ale Clone Recipe and Tasting
If you’ve never had the opportunity to try Avrey Brewing’s Elle’s Broawn Ale, do yourself a favor and seek it out. It’s in pretty much any grocery or liquor store in (at least) Colorado. Malty with just enough hops, it’s a gret example of an American Brown Ale.
I had been meaning to try brewing a Brown ale since my preferences lean toward malt rather than hops. During a study session for a recent attempt at a BJCP written test, we sampled this beer as a classic example of an American Brown (it’s not technically listed as a classic example in the BJCP guide, but it’s close enough) and it inspired me to try brewing this one. As an added bonus, I remembered that Avery lists the grain bill and hop schedule (basically, the recipe) on their website for all of their beers, so I cruised on over and got the info for Elle’s Brown.
Oddly, when I plugged the recipe into Beersmith, the IBUs came in WAAAY low (7?!) so I bumped them up to about 25 to bring them more in line with the style guidelines. Also, My local homebrew store was out of Bullion hops so, rather than ordering some and postponing my brew day, I decided to go Sterling all the way.
I also decided to try fermenting in a corny keg for the first time with this brew. Watch the video to hear more about that.
