2019 Advent Calendar – Beers 13 – 18

Week three. Another great week of fantastic beers from some fine craft breweries in Deutschland. Personally, I didn’t have one in this set that I didn’t care for.

As good as the beers were, this was a week of ups and downs, calendar beer-wise. One the plus side, it supplied some variation to the past two weeks of helles and wheat beer (more on that later, of course). However, I was disappointed to discover that one of the beers that I received was different from what, it seems, most other people got in their calendars. However, I was almost expecting that to happen and if the substitution hadn’t been on a beer that I was really hoping to try, I would have mentioned it only in passing.

{Here’s the main 2019 Brewer’s Advent Calendar page with all the other posts linked. Beers 1 – 6 can be found here, and beers 7 – 12 can be found here.}

{Mike} – Jesse is doing a fantastic job of keeping up with his drinking duties, I however, ended up being a slacker. It is afterall, the season for Christmas parties 🙂
I’ll echo what Jesse said, these beers are all really good.

Beer: Jubiläums-Sud (Dunkel/Dark)
Brewer: Herrnbräu
Style: Lager – Munich Dunkel

Nice head. Bready aroma and flavor. Quite a bit of body in this one, I thought, especially for a lager. Slightly hoppy finish.

Beer: Publiner
Brewery: Schlossbrauerei Herrngiersdorf
Brewed by Privatbrauerei H. Egerer, Herrnbräu
Style: Lager – Munich Dunkel

Very malty and sweet. Darker that I was expecting. The can said “Irish in character” and I can see what they mean. This reminds me of an Irish red ale is some regards.

An app is advertised on the box that is essentially another Untappd. It allows one to rate beers and leave comments about them. There is also a blog section where the people who complied the beers for the calendar talk to the brewers about the beer. When I checked the blog for toadys beer, they were talking about a rauchbier, not this one. I was slightly disappointed because I have been wanting to try a rauchbier. No matter, this one was quite good.

[Mike} I just wanted to add that I also received the publiner, rather than the rauchbier. It had a really interesting flavor from the interaction of the darker malts and the graininess that many of these beers have in common. At least that’s what I believe to be the cause of it.

Beer: Urtyp Hell Edel Bayer
Brewer: Privatbrauerei H. Egerer
Style: Lager – Helles

This is another of the “typical” beers that are in the advent calendar. A helles, it’s got a grainy start and a slightly hoppy finish. Clean and light.

Beer: Hallertauer Hopfen Cuvée
Brewer: Schlossbrauerei Herrngiersdorf
Style: Pilsner – German

Definitely a pilsner. Clean, crisp with a very slight sulphur note.

{Mike} This was really tasty, but I have to admit, I was expecting a little more of a kick with the hops. This was crisply bitter, but not nearly at the level I was expecting. All in all, it was a pretty great beer, and it was interesting to taste Hallertauer as the star of the show.

Beer: Schwarze Tinte
Brwer: Hopfenkopf Bräu
Collaboration with Brauerei Seidl – Dietrachinger Bier
Style: Stout – Coffee

A stout! Huzzah! This is a nice reprieve from the parade of helles and wheat beers that have been in this case. Untappd tells me that this is a coffee stout, but I am not getting any coffee from this. The flavor is roasty and malty. It has medium body and finished slightly bitter.

{Mike} – I kept getting kind of a burnt sugar / molasses character to the beer. It wasn’t at all what I was expecting, but I still quite enjoyed it.

Beer: Kurpfalzbräu Helles
Brewer: Welde Braumanufaktur
Style: Lager – Helles

I believe I’m becoming a fan of helles beers. This one happens to be different from the others in that it seems to have a sweet malt character, which I quite like. It finished very smooth with little hop.

{Mike} – I have to chime in that I also am becoming a big Helles fan. Just a good clean, falvorfull beer. There’s been a number of them in this box, and I think this was one of the more subdued ones.
