Red Leg March 2019 Visit

Finally! We’ve made it back to where it all began. Yes dear readers, it was sitting at Red Leg, where the idea to have this blog was solidified into a concrete plan. Jesse and I had been hitting a brewery every week for quite awhile, and our friends Scott, Damon, and Bill had all joined us on that night, when the idea came up. Now, with tens of visitors under our belt, we finally can do an “official’ post about Red Leg.

One thing you should know, Red Leg makes some darn good beer! I’ve long been a fan of many of their flagships, and although I don’t make it out to the brewery itself all that often, I’ve bought just about everything from my friendly neighborhood liquor store.

One note, I don’t think my nose was working really well on this visit, I could really only smell the most obvious aromas from these great beers. Ah, springtime in the Rockies!

Blue Nose Brown – A really nice English style brown. Malty, and finishes with a roast flavor. Everything you want in a brown beer.

J: I agree that this was a very drinkable brown and, as Mike said, malty and smooth. As I drink more beer and become more familiar with the various styles, I find myself gravitating to malty, rather than hoppy, beers. I quite enjoyed this one.

Buddy Czech Pils – Really great Pils! Pilsner isn’t a style that I tend to seek out, but after having Buddy Czech, I realize the reason why I don’t seek them out is that I haven’t had many really good ones. Thanks to Red Leg, I think I’ll have to seek them out a bit more. Buddy Czech is bright, crisp and refreshing, with a slight corn flavor to it that was perfect.

J: Somewhere along the way, I had a pilsner that I didn’t care for and I was saddled with the impression that I disliked pilsners as a style. I had it in my head that the only one that I would ever like was Budweiser Budvar which I was introduced to, and fell in love with, when I was stationed in Germany a long time ago. But this one changed my mind. I quite enjoyed this beer.

Cherry / Boysenberry Berliner Weisse – I love me some Berliner Weisse. This one is slightly tart, with, as you would expect, a nice berry flavor. Lovely color too.

J: I agree with Mike on this one as well. It was a light and pleasantly tart.

Devil Dog Stout – Roasty, malty, slightly sweet, with coffee flavors and roast flavors and aromas. A great stout!

Prospector’s Pick Kolsch – It seems that we’ve been really getting lucky with Kolsch beers lately. Usually I’m a bit disappointed, but this kolsch is amazing. It was clear and light, nicely balanced, and finished with a biscuit / bread / corn flavor that I really love.

[Jesse]:
French Toast Ale – ABV 20% IBU 7 – This was an …interesting… beer. I could see where the brewer was going with it and what they wanted the finished product to be but it’s not quite there, in my opinion. The beer was actually not too bad, but nothing I’d have to have again. It had a sweet start and cinnamon or nutmeg (or something) flavor.

With many of the breweries that Mike and I have been visiting lately, there are many of them that have one or two really good beer(s) and the rest are “meh” at best. The thing that strikes me about Red Leg is that I don’t know if they have any beers that will blow your socks off but all of the beers of theirs that I’ve had are good, solid beers that I would happily drink on a regular basis (full disclosure, as I type this, I am enjoying a Devil Dog Stout, which is, as Mike points out, a great stout).
