Atrevida Beer Company August 2019 Visit

The 17th of this month marks the one year anniversary of the blog’s first post, and we’ve made good progress on our brewery visits. After this week’s visit to Atrevida Beer Company, we only have one more stop left, and we’ll have hit every brewery in town. We still have plans to hit some tap houses, and some outlying breweries, but we’ve made some good progress.

As I mentioned on the post for Atrevida Beer Company, all of the beers here have a Latin twist to them, and there are some really interesting items on the menu. Unfortunately, Jesse and I mere mortals, and we have to drive home, so the selection we can have at any one visit is a bit limited.

One note on the beer listing, I’m not sure if the Aztec Godiva was made with Mahuet sap or not. I know it had a sap in it, and it’s listed in the brewery, but I didn’t write it down, and am relying on untappd. The only reference I found to maheut sap on google was on the beer’s listing on untappd, which I’m betting is wrong.

Here’s what we thought of the beers we had:

Aztec Godiva II

Aztec Godiva II – 6.8% ABV – This Belgian Style Saison with Mahuet sap and Lychee.
Nice dose of Belgian character in the nose and flavor, with an additional fruity flavor I assume from the lychee. I have to admit that this may be my first exposure to Lychee, and I had to google it to figure out what it is.

Light vanilla flavors. Great color. Medium mouthfeel, medium dry finish.

My Jenn – 7.6% ABV- On the menu, it’s listed as a White Chocolate Espresso Stout, which had me a bit confused at first. I was expecting something different, but as you can tell from the picture, it’s a white stout, with chocolate and espresso. Duh!

I’m guessing they used coco nibs in this one, and for some reason, I think the bitterness from them left me with a berry like impression. It was pretty interesting, and didn’t taste like it was over 7%.

Seeing as it was National IPA Day, I absolutely had to have at least one IPA to celebrate. After perusing the beer menu, which had a nice variety of styles, I decided on the E-Legal IPA. However, when I “bellied up to the bar” to order, I was told that they just tapped a tropical IPA and gave me a small taster of it so I decided to get a half-pour to start my evening.

Perico Pín Pín – ?? ABV ?? IBU – This tropical IPA was not quite what I had in mind when I ordered an IPA, but it was a fine beer. My one issue that I had with it was that I didn’t get much “tropical” out of it. It did have a slight citrus or maybe mango flavor, but not very much. Aside from that, it was quite a nice beer. Very drinkable.

E-Legal Rye IPA – 7.8% ABV 95 IBU – This was more of what I had in mind to celebrate National IPA Day. I generally like more aggressive hops in my IPAs, but this one was well balanced and was really smooth. I could see having a few of these on a summers evening.

Chocolate Ibarra Stout – 6.6% ABV 0 IBU – If I had to choose, this would probably have been my favorite of the three beers I tried this evening. It had a nice chocolate flavor that lingered for quite a while, but in a pleasant way. I did feel that it was a bit on the thin side, maybe that had to do with the fact that it was on nitro, but I personally like stouts to be a bit richer so it was noticeable to me. I also noticed a vary slightly astringent flavor about mid-way through. But overall, a decent stout, IMO.

I do have to mention that the staff at Atrevida are great. I would say that they worked to make everyone in the establishment feel welcome and at home, but I don’t think it’s work for them – it’s just how they are.
