Big Jim’s Green Chile
ABV: 4.9%
IBU: 27
Most of the time when I mention a Chile beer to someone, I get some strange looks. Many people, especially those who don’t like spicy stuff, just don’t think it’s something that they would want to drink. If you’re not sure about the style, then I suggest you try Smiling Toad’s Big Jim’s Chile beer. It has a very nice, yet mild, flavor, and there really isn’t mush spice to it. It’s very pleasant.
The roasted chile aroma is mild, not quite as up front as I prefer, but bonus points for it being there at all. Many chili beers are missing it entirely.
Frankly, it’s a bit unfair of me to expect the roasted aroma from all Chile beers, but because I’m a particular fan of those based on Colorado or New Mexico green chilies, I always look for it. Of course, here in Colorado, smelling roasting chiles means that fall is here, and you better grab a couple of bushels before they are all gone.
If you haven’t had a chili beer, the spiciness presents itself in a really interesting way, kind of on the back of your throat and back corners of your mouth. The spice in this beer is really mild, and very enjoyable.
