Jesse and Mike have been talking about doing some small batch brewing for a little while now, and Jesse finally did it! Here he talks about his method and recipe for a small batch IPA. He ran into a couple of issues along the way.
One of the lessons learned was that he can’t bring 2 gallons of wort to a boil on his electric stove using the 10G kettle. Jesse was counting on about 1/2 Gallon of boil off outside, but he had to resort to bringing the kettle outside and boiling it on his normal burner, and along with the wind, he ended up with quite a bit of boil off.
The gravity was supposed to be 1.063 but ended up at 1.081. No worries though, once he diluted it to the volume he was looking for he ended up at 1.053.
Mike has ran into the same problem with trying to boil a couple of gallons of water on the electric stove as well.
Jesse mentioned that while looking at a 5L flask, he ran across the smaller 5G kettle for $29.99.
