Episode 17: East Coast Stash tasting and German Helles Exportbier (5C) Homebrew

This week we’re filming in person, since both our families have been under strict lockdown, and we’ve all been wearing masks when going out, we thought the risk was pretty minimal.

Big Brew was awesome! Huge thank you to Pikes Peak Brewing and Chris for supporting this event year after year. We look forward to being able to brew in the outdoor area next year at Pikes Peak, rather than at home because of the stupid COVID-19, but cheers to you guys! It wouldn’t have been possible without you!

Jesse went with a traditional IPA, and had a successful brew day, his first solo one. Mike turned his IPA wort into a California Common with Kveik Yeast (Kveik Common?), and a Pale ale with some German hops, Grungeist, which translates to Green Ghost.

If you’re interested in Mike’s Raspberry Honey Nut Brown Ale recipe (Named Rasp-Muttin), which came out pretty darn good, you can find it at the link.

Since we all were up at Pikes Peak for the Big Brew, we grabbed a bunch of beers. Jesse was very impressed with “Let’s get it on”, a Whiskey Barrel Aged Stout made with coffee and chocolate.

This week we dipped into some of Jesse’s East Coast Stash, and sampled “Heliocentric: Tangerine” from New Trail Brewing. A fruited sour made in collaboration with Foreign Objects and Discord brewing companies from New York.

Our second beer was Jesse’s Hombrewed Dortmunder Export (Also called a German Helles Export – Category 5C). You can grab that recipe here. It’s darn tasty, could probably use a little bit more carbonation and a few more IBUs, but really great as is.
