Trinity April 2019 visit
Well, this visit was a long time in coming. I had been meaning to get to Trinity for a very long time but the opportunity never seemed to present itself. As I had mentioned in a few of the previous posts, Mike and I have been making plans to get here for a few weeks, but those plans have always been changed at the last moment for one reason or another. But I’m glad that we finally made it; I can’t say I’m disappointed.
On my quest to get out of my rut and explore new types of beer, Mike suggested that I start trying some sours. My experience with them in the past has been some samples from various breweries at the All Colorado Beer Fest. Well, I think that was a mistake because some of them were not just sour but SUPER sour. I liken it to mentioning that you like hot sauce (Tabasco or Cholula) and someone having you try the habenero/ghost pepper sauce. So, I decided I did not care for them. But we were recently having a beer and I remarked about a beer that I thought was quite good. Mike informed me that it was actually a sour and suggested Trinity as a destination. Since then, I’ve tried a few other sours and, by golly, I think I may be hooked. I’ll work my way down the pH scale, I think.
While I’m stressing the sour beers in this post, don’t think that Trinity has only sours. They had a range of different types of beers; barrel aged stouts, IPAs, etc. All of those that I tried were very good.
Purple Butterfly Fist – 5.2% ABV 0 IBU – As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a sucker for cleverly named beers and this one (as well as Pink Butterfly Fist) caught my attention so I thought “What the heck..?”. While I’m not sorry I ordered it, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, I wouldn’t have to order this one again. It’s an IPA, but you would certainly never guess it by the flavor. It’s very sweet and smooth and sweet and a little creamy and sweet. Did I mention it was sweet? I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone had dumped some Strawberry Quik in my beer. But, even with all that, it was actually really good. As I said, I enjoyed the whole thing and am glad I tried it, but I don’t know if I would get another one. This might be the perfect beer for the person who dislikes beer.
7 Day Sour – 5% ABV – This is the reason I wanted to go to Trinity. Not this beer specifically, but a good sour and this one checked that box. I really like this one. It was, as the same suggests, sour, but also quite smooth with a pleasant after-taste. Looking at the description, with a pH of 3.0, it seems that this is one of the less-sour sours they have available. I would recommend this beer to anyone, especially if they’re just dipping their toe in the “sour beer pool” (as I am). I was pleased to learn that this is sold in bottles. I’ll be sure to try to find it at my local liquor store.

Thaison: Naked biere de miel with Brett and local black forest honey. 8.1% ABV
Slightly sour, gave me the impression of something similar to orange juice. Really gorgeous beer. Brett character comes out more as it warms, in taste and aroma.
I have to say, I’ve never heard of a Biere De Miel before, but it was pretty darn tasty. Also, I would never have guessed that it was 8.1%, it wasn’t hot at all, and I would have guessed much lower.
Damn it feels good to be a gangster –Black and White ironic sour. 6.4% ABV
I had asked the bartender if they had anything “funky”, I was looking for some of the other more interesting Brett flavors, and he suggested this one. I was expecting funky, but I didn’t really get it. It was still a good, tart beer, but didn’t really have what I was looking for. The beer is super dark, with very little head on it.
