Can you Homebrew good Lagers at Ale Temperatures? Experiment, triangle test and results.
Tim, the owner of Fermentations, had a sack of grain that he decided to not stock anymore due to a lack of demand. Having read for years in the lager homebrew kits that if you don’t have temperature control, fermenting with a lager yeast at ale temperatures was just fine, he decided to put it to the test. Tim worked with our homebrew club to form up a masterminds group, and Darin volunteered to head it up.
The group brewed an International Pale Lager. Not only did Tim donate the grain to the effort, but he also donated hops and yeast. He even went so far as to bag the ingredients for each of the brewers! There were many different yeasts used, and homebrew batches were fermented at different temperatures, with a focus of lager yeasts fermented at ale and lager temperatures.
All of us really appreciate Fermentations making the experiment possible as well as hosting the tasting! If you’re in the Colorado Springs Area, you should stop in and check them out.

One note, we talk a lot about the brewer Jesse, who made the beers that were being sampled in the triangle test, as well as who compiled the graphs and data for the experiment. She’s an excellent brewer and put a lot of work into this experiment, and although it’s spelled the same as one of the hosts of these videos, it’s not in fact the same person. Just so you don’t get mixed up.
We recorded video at the experiment, and then stitched it all together, and on further review, we really didn’t get much video of Jesse the brewer, I don’t know how she escaped the camera! We did feature her husband Simon quite a bit.
What were the results? I’ll let you watch and learn for yourselves.
